Social Cognition/
Socio-Emotional Communication
Assessment & Support

Difficulties in social cognition/socio-emotional communication are common to many neurological conditions and have been shown to relate closely to breakdown and strain in relationships with others (at home, at work and in the community). These difficulties can cause confusion and distress for both the person with the neurological condition and their significant others.

These difficulties can include challenges in:
- understanding the perspectives and intentions of others (mentalising)
- social inference, recognition of sincerity, deceit and sarcasm
- recognition of specific emotions in others' social communication
- knowledge of socially-specific information/rules/norms
- recognition of when these rules are broken (to differing degrees)
- inhibiting/putting the breaks on thoughts, words and behaviour in social situations, and calibrating this for differing degrees of formality/responding to varying expectations of social behaviour from others and across sociation situations
- the use of emotion or 'gut feeling' to guide decisions in ambiguous situations (common characteristics of social situations and interactions)

Given the clinical importance of these difficulties, it is surprising that these are rarely assessed by clinical neuropsychologists/clinical psychologists. Post-assessment social cognition rehabilitation provision is even rarer.

At Rippling Minds, we have unique expertise in both the assessment & rehabilitation of these difficulties. Dr Giles Yeates has led key research studies using pioneering social cognition assessments to explore differing social outcomes, and has also been involved  in the validation of a novel assessment tool, the Bangor Gambling Task (BGT).

The therapeutic work described elsewhere on this website include social cognition rehabilitation interventions, and in addition we can provide specific focused social cognition assessment and rehabilitation/support services. This input currently is not to provide a condition diagnosis, rather to steer the direction of support for an individual and their significant relationships, be they at home, in the workplace or in the community.

This assessment and intervention work can potentially be provided online and/or in-person, depending on the needs of the individual and situation.
