A Ripple: Emotions & Relationships following Brain Injury
Acquired Brain Injuries (traumatic brain injuries, strokes, hypoxia, infections, life with/after a brain tumour) often have a profound effect on social relationships, leaving the survivor in a constant state of distress and confusion, and often socially-isolated. Those connected to them in their social network (family, friends and work colleagues) can also feel upset and confused when things don’t work out in social interactions.
This process has been compared to a boulder being thrown into a lake, and the ripple that radiates out from the splash. The Boulder is the brain damage itself. The Ripple is impact on the minds and feelings of the survivor AND those connected to them.
