Academic Research

Centre for Movement, Occupational & Rehabilitation Sciences (MOReS), Oxford Brookes University

I am an academic a day a week at Oxford Brookes University, developing research programmes in Tai Chi & Neurological Conditions; Psychological Therapies for Neurological Conditions and Couples Work & Neuro-Disability.

I have been successful in being awarded several grants to fund my research activities (see CV).

The main strands of my research activity are as follows:

  • The “Social Cognition, So What?” programme, investigating survivor social cognition functions as predictors of interpersonal outcomes in post-trauma adjustment, couples relationships, vocational functioning, and child-relative adjustment following acquired brain injury.

  • Developing a neuropsychologically-adapted couples therapy intervention to support empathic and emotional connection between romantic partners in acquired brain injury.

  • Developing the use of time-limited psychodynamic psychotherapies within neuro-rehabilitation services.

  • The use of Flow State Experiences to optimise the physical, psychological and social impact of Tai Chi practice for people with neurological conditions.

  • Developing social cognition-informed vocational interventions to support relationships in the workplace following acquired brain injury

The wider activities of MOReS can be found here.

I am an active member of the international Neuropsychoanalysis community, developing applied perspectives on supporting people with neurological conditions, informed by a psychodynamic perspective. He is a previous International Neuropsychoanalysis Fellow.

Editorial Responsibilities

I am the editor of two series of publications for Routledge, the Brain Injury and Neuro-Disability & Psychotherapy series. These publishing platforms are instrumental in supporting clinicians to disseminate innovations and best practice examples in their work, and foster unique experimental-clinical partnerships.
